Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

A gastroenterologist helps diagnose and treat conditions related to your digestive system, which includes parts of the body like the mouth, oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine (also known as the bowel), and rectum.

When a doctor reaches the highest grade in their field within the NHS, they’re called a “Consultant.” After completing specialist gastroenterology training, they get listed on the General Medical Council’s specialist register for that specialist area. These doctors, like Dr Sami, become “Consultant Gastroenterologist”; this means they’re highly qualified and experienced in treating digestive system issues.

If your symptoms suggest a problem with your digestive system, we recommend checking your digestive health. Common symptoms include acid reflux, swallowing problems, and abdominal pain.

A gastroenterologist can diagnose the cause of your symptoms and recommend treatment for your condition(s). We frequently treat patients with GORD (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease), IBS (irritable bowel syndrome), gastritis and Barrett’s oesophagus. However, we diagnose and treat a much wider range of digestive conditions.

If you have any concerns at all, come and see us.

We can use some endoscopic procedures (a test to look inside the body), such as endoscopy or colonoscopy, to diagnose and treat various digestive disorders. Your gastroenterologist will let you know which ones you require.

We can perform tests, such as barium swallow, high-resolution oesophageal manometry, 96-hour pH capsule (BRAVO), and blood or stool tests.

Our treatments include the stretta anti-reflux procedure, dietary therapies, and endoscopic dilatation or removal of polyps.

An NHS gastroenterologist will see patients referred by a doctor, or other specialist, and provides care, free of charge. Private patients may refer themselves for treatment and can pay for treatment themselves or through insurance. Visit our Fees page to learn about the costs.

A private gastroenterologist might also work for the NHS. Those that do must meet the NHS’s strict standards. However, private healthcare providers – such as our clinic – and the NHS are all regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC). Our clinic facilities are rated “outstanding”.

You may benefit from seeing a private gastroenterologist if you want shorter waiting times and faster access to treatment. We also have the time and facilities to explore your symptoms thoroughly in a comfortable setting and provide tailored treatment to your needs.

Private treatment will not affect your NHS care, as the NHS explains here: If I pay for private treatment, how will my NHS care be affected?

We take a patient-first approach to treatment, which is why our website is full of free, credible resources to help you make the right choice about your care. Our resources are evidence-led, aren’t influenced by businesses, and meet the NHS’s Information Standard criteria for content.
